Cancer is increasingly becoming a menace and assuming alarming proportion of death in Nigeria. Nigeria is now ranked 13th lowest for life expectancy in the world with cancer the major contributor. Many resourceful Nigerians have fallen victim to the scourge. Breast cancer and prostate cancer are the biggest killers in Nigeria. Adoption of Western lifestyles and technology can be argued to be the major culprits in the recent upsurge in cancer cases in the nation
Cancer is the biggest killer in the world, accounting for more deaths than malaria, HIV/AIDS, heart diseases and tuberculosis combined.
It is increasingly becoming a menace and assuming alarming proportion of deaths in Nigeria due to adoptions of western lifestyle – changing dietary habit from the traditional fibre rich diet, lack of exercise, consumption of processed food products and the culture of secrecy of the cause of death, including late reportage of symptoms to the hospitals.
Staggeringly, one in every three Nigerians is being diagnosed with one of numerous types of cancer. Nigeria is now ranked 13th lowest for life expectancy in the world, with cancer the major contributor according to the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP).
A terrifying 120,000 cancer deaths occur in Nigeria, which translates to 15 Nigerian deaths from cancer every hour. This however, may be somewhat underestimated since an average Nigerian on middle to low income is unable to take their cases to the hospital because of meagre financial resources.

– Some Civil Society Organizations staged a protest to the commission’s zonal office, demanding justice
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has vowed to prosecute all federal lawmakers indicted in the budget padding controversy.
The EFCC deputy director, Operations, Iliyasu Kwarbai, said this on Monday, August 29, when 32 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) staged a peaceful protest to the Lagos zonal office of the commission demanding the prosecution of those involved in the budget padding scandal rocking the House of Representatives.
Kwarbai said the commission had received many petitions in respect of the matter from members of the public and investigation is going on in Abuja, Vanguard reports.

He said: “ EFCC does not cover any one, whoever is involved will be dealt with strictly according to law. Anybody who is involved in corruption, no matter how highly he or she is, we don’t cover any person, once we have received a petition, investigates it and once the person is indicted, we invite the accused and on the case of the budget padding, they will never go free.
“We are very happy that you are here and we are in solidarity with you. We are very happy that you are joining us in the fight against corruption. The fight is not for EFCC alone, it is for everybody.”
The CSOs stormed the EFCC office, expressing dismay that individuals like the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, his deputy, Lasun Yusuf, House minority leader Leo Ogor, among others fingered in the budget padding allegations have neither been invited nor interrogated or prosecuted.
